Seasonal Outlook: The Weather Company Expects Another Warm/Dry Spring and Summer for Eastern Europe, with Cooler/Wetter Conditions Confined to Far West

Persistent Summer Negative North Atlantic Oscillation Pattern Expected to Appear Again

Andover, MA, 26 April 2017 — For the aggregate May-July period, The Weather Company, an IBM Business, is forecasting above-normal temperatures across most European locations, with the exception of the U.K., coastal Norway, and northwestern sections of Iberia and France. The warmth is expected to be especially notable across eastern Europe into western Russia.

“As we look ahead to summer, the ‘elephant in the room’ is the fact that 9 of the last 10 summers have been characterized by North Atlantic blocking and low pressure across western Europe,” said Dr. Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist with The Weather Company. “This has resulted in cooler, wetter summers across northwestern Europe and hotter, drier summers across southeastern Europe. Our theory is that the historically low Arctic sea ice levels are driving this pattern, which would argue for a similar summer again this year. However, many of the other models and indicators are suggesting a warmer, drier summer across northern Europe, with cooler, wetter conditions across the South. We have compromised between these two ideas in our summer forecast for now and will monitor conditions heading into our next update on 22 May.”

For the May-July 2017 period, The Weather Company is forecasting the following conditions:

May

  • Nordic region – Warmer than normal east, cooler than normal west
  • U.K. – Cooler than normal
  • Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, cooler than normal west
  • Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, cooler than normal west

June

  • U.K. – Slightly warmer than normal
  • Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
