Weather Underground Launches Storm App for Android

With the launch of Weather Underground’s Storm App, Android users can now dive into the wide array of weather data and storm tracking tools that everyone from the outdoor enthusiast to the experienced storm tracker is looking for. Equipped with the highest resolution radar, advanced storm cell data and tracking features, customizable map layers, and severe weather alerts, the Storm App by Weather Underground prepares users for any type of impending weather. In addition to sophisticated storm tracking features, the app offers current conditions and hyperlocal hourly and daily forecast information, based on data collected from Weather Underground’s network of over 200,000 personal weather stations across the world.

“Storm stands out from other radar apps in that it provides users with all of the in-depth weather data they need within an easily accessible, highly customizable map,” said Mark Edwards, vice president of engineering at Weather Underground. “Knowing when severe weather is approaching and the intensity of the storm is imperative for users. With Storm, we sought to put that information front and center within high-definition, data rich map layers.”

Notable features of the app include:

Past & Future Radar: View animations in the highest resolution radar available of past activity and extrapolations of activity up to two hours in the future.

Enhanced Global Radar: An experimental radar layer with worldwide coverage. It combines existing radar data with a computer model proxy when data is not available.

Storm Tracks: Provide a detailed analysis of an impending storm. This includes a storm strength rating, detailed components of the storm (such as wind, hail, lightning, and tornadoes), the speed and direction, the precipitation rate, and much more.

Lightning: View lightning 100 miles around your selected location (Continental U.S. only).

In-App alerts: Severe weather alerts issued by NOAA, Environment Canada, and Meteoalarm.

Full screen map: View customizable data layers including: earthquakes, fronts, severe weather alerts, and more.

Social weather: Share storm tracks and radar data with your friends and family via Facebook, Twitter, email or text.

Ad-free subscription: available for $1.99 per year.

Weather Underground’s Storm App is now available across a variety of platforms and devices. It’s free to download within Google Play or within iTunes and the Apple App Store.
